Theoretical and practical training to prepare the students for emergency situations on board and to respond with immediate actions that minimize potential hazards in firefighting, rescue, survival and prevention of accidents on board.

The certificate of Basic Safety Training is mandatory to be able to work on board of a civil ship, regardless of the category and position, according to the provisions of Order FOM / 2296/2002 on Basic Safety Training: "It will require the Basic Safety Training Certificate to engage in maritime professional functions on civil ships, as well as those with safety or pollution prevention tasks related to the operations of the ship, under the Obligations and Consignations of the Ship, the On-Board Emergency Plan in case of Hydrocarbon Contamination or the Safety Management Manual ".

It is also necessary to obtain the Professional Master of Recreation (PPER).

It is issued by the Spanish General Directorate of the Merchant Marine (DGMM) and is supported by the United Nations International Maritime Organization (IMO).

The course has a duration of 70 hours of which 45 hours correspond to the theoretical content and 25 hours to practical training.

Escola Port, a nautical school approved by the General Directorate of the Merchant Marine (DGMM) and with the ISO 9001 quality certificate, teaches the Basic Safety Training course in accordance to the STCW training agreement which establishes minimum standards for trainings in all nations.

This only applies in case you want to issue your certificate in Spain. To apply for the issuance of the certificate of "Basic Safety Training" The following documentation must be submitted to the Sea captaincy of the autonomous community: Madame Maritime Notebook: The Maritime Registration Book is the official identity of the sailor, internationally accepted, which are registered holder embarking and disembarking. The DGMM the issue and must apply to the Sea captaincy. For obtaining the applicant must have a diploma or a certificate of professional yacht marine specialty (such as Basic Training Certificate specialty). It's used for:
  • Embarking on any vessel as a civilian crew
  • Ask for medical assistance in any port city, Spanish or foreign.
  • Benefit medical examination at the Social Institute of the Navy.
  • Staying in numerous houses located in the sea most port cities of Spain, by paying a token amount for their services.
  • Ask for repatriation in cases of urgency or need.
  • Insert or apply for jobs through various means available to the ISM.

To board must pass a medical examination maritime shipping (free) made in Maritime Health Centers ISM which belongs to the Spanish Social Security.
