In 1888 in the ‘Paseo de Colón’, in front of the Capitanía General building stood the ‘Gran Hotel International’. This was a modernist work by Lluís Domènech i Montaner. The building was conceived as a temporary building to accommodate visitors to the Universal Exposition in 1888 and was completed in record time of just 83 days.
Despite the monumental architectural style the building lasted only just over a year. At the end of the exhibition it was demolished as it was built on land donated by the port and also had no foundations, as it was a temporary hotel. The image on the left shows part of the monument to Antonio Lopez moved a few feet from where it currently is.
