On June 1st 1888, as part of Barcelona’s Universal Exposition, the Christopher Columbus monument was inaugurated in honour of the discoverer of America. This monument today is still surrounded by controversy as to its meaning and to the birthplace of the navigator, there are recent claims that Columbus was Catalan.
As for the statue it was originally said that the finger pointed to America in which case it should be pointing towards the ‘Rambla’ so now it is said that he is pointing towards India, which was Colombus’s original destination. Another version says that the discoverer points to Genoa which some believe to be the city where he was born.
