The Poblenou neighbourhood of Somorrostro stretched from the hospital for Infectious Diseases (now the Hospital del Mar) to the now defunct Lebón Gas Factory. The origin of this neighbourhood, which is on record since 1882, was for fishermen. However, over the years it became, like the neighbouring areas on this coastal strip, a suburb of shacks with a large colony of gypsies and actually ended up becoming the paradigmatic example of a shantytown in Barcelona. Finally it disappeared in 1966 on the pretext of holding a naval week celebration.
