The Yacht Skipper course aboard Escola Port is an incredible experience that you can't miss.
In five days of sailing on a cruise in the Balearic Islands, reviewing the theory and doing all the necessary practices to obtain the YS prepare yourself for long cruises on boats up to 24 meters long.

Requirements to obtain the title of Yacht Skipper
Have a PER degree
To sign up for the PI exam you must have issued the PER title
If you don't have the PER yet, you can hire one pack with both courses.
Pass a theoretical exam
In Catalonia, 3 PI exams are held a year.

Expand attributions?
If you want to steer sailboats, in addition to the mandatory ones, you have to do complementary practices.
If you do the complementary practices after having issued the degree, you must request a new issue to include the new attributions.

Nautical medical certificate

Only what is done in centers authorized by the DGT is valid. Once completed it expires after 90 days, it is important that you get it after passing the exam and the internship.
Deadlines
To sign up for an exam there are specific deadlines, which you can consult at Port School, on the website of the Generalitat de Catalunya or in your CCAA.
To request the issuance of your degree, the maximum period will be 24 months from the date on which the exam notes are published.
In the same way, the period of 24 months counts from the date on which the internships have been passed. If you have not passed the exam, you have 23 months to do so and issue the degree.
Validity period
The YS title is valid for 10 years.
To renew it you must pay the corresponding fee and provide a medical certificate.

The course begins on Monday at 2:00 p.m., at the Olympic Port in Barcelona.
We will organize the crew, do the safety briefing, study the weather, plot the route, distribute the guards and cabins, and you will have free time on land to buy groceries.
During the week we will alternate motor navigation and sailing practices while we make the crossing to the Balearic Islands, Menorca or Mallorca, until completing the YS ON BOARD practices in Barcelona on Friday.
During the course you will complete these practices:

In Catalonia, three PI exams are held a year: April, June and December.
There are specific deadlines for registering, and you will have to pay a fee through the Department of Education website. nautical of the Generalitat.

Content of the theoretical course Yacht Skipper
These are the 4 topics that the questions will ask you about the exam.
All the units are related, understanding them as a whole is essential for optimal training.
In each topic you will learn:
Know the points where forces are applied on a ship. The influence of the location of the load weights and their effects. Know the effects of external forces (drift, downforce). Know and name the safety equipment and its correct use.
The effect of pressure, humidity and temperature in the air related to meteorology. The effect of water pressure, density and temperature in addition to the effect of the moon on ocean currents. The effect of the rotation of the earth in its ecliptic on the movement of its air masses. Decipher weather charts.
Identify and calculate the different courses, in addition to reinforcing the calculations and formulas learned in PER. Identify different points of the terrestrial sphere and their definitions. Define the different measures of time. Know the operation of different navigation assistance devices (RADAR, AIS, GPS) in addition to electronic cartography.
Develop all the graphic resolutions (chart) and know the analytics. Extrapolate the tides. Operate with sines, cosines, tangents and angles of triangles.

To study the theoretical part, you have access to all the content online. However, when it comes to practicing the charts, you will need specific material (if you already have the PER material, you will only need nautical charts).

PI mandatory safety and navigation practices 48 h
Navigation practices last 48 hours.
They are carried out in one session with a minimum of 36 hours in transit.
Through various exercises, other aspects of navigation are sought to be perfected, mainly aimed at crossing and safe navigation, in addition, each student will have to perform a full navigation watch during the day and another at night.
We leave Port Olímpic on a Friday afternoon heading for the Balearic Islands, returning on Sunday at the same departure time.
These practices are carried out on board one of our ships in Barcelona's Olympic Port.
PI sailing practices
Complementary practices are voluntary and valid to expand the basic attributions you obtain with the mandatory practices.
You have to complete the sailing practices if you are interested in sailing sailboats, they last 16 hours and you can complete them in 4-hour daily sessions during the week or in two 8-hour sessions on a weekend.
The groups have a maximum of 11 participants in the navigation practices.
Official exam in Catalonia
The exam assesses the theoretical knowledge of the content of the 4 units of the syllabus.
Questions related to internships are not included. The practices will be evaluated by an EscolaPort instructor.
The exams are called in Catalonia by the Generalitat and there are four conocatories a year.
You can sign up for the exam you prefer voluntarily, the school will not register you for the exam without your formal authorization.
It is not mandatory to sign up for the one that coincides with the theoretical training.
There are specific deadlines for registering for the exam, after a certain date you will no longer be able to appear and you will have to wait for another call.
To take the exam, in addition to registering for the call of your choice, you must pay a registration fee on the website of the Generalitat's nautical department.
– The exam is usually held at the weekend, in a public institute.
- A few days before each call, the list of admitted candidates is published.
– You choose the call, but until the list is published you will not know the place, day and time when you have to appear for the exam.

Your Yacht Skipper title may have additional qualifications to provide paid services and, for example, to be able to charter with tourists.

If you already have the PER, you can obtain the PY title within 2 to 6 months, depending on your dedication, and the Basic Training course in two weeks.
