Requirements

Requirements to obtain the title Yacht Captain

Have a yacht skipper/wave title


To register for the CI exam you must have a PI qualification.
To be a yacht skipper you must first have the PER title.

Pass a theoretical exam

In Catalonia, 3 PI and CI exams are held per year.
For the PER, more than 8 exam sessions are held per year.

Complete CI internships

In addition to passing the CI exam, you must complete a mandatory practice: 48-hour navigation.
Each degree (PER, PI, CI) requires completing a number of hours of mandatory internships.

Expand attributions?

If you want to steer sailboats, in addition to the mandatory ones, you have to do complementary practices.
You can complete the sailing practice with the PER and it will be valid for the *CI.

Pay fees

Examination
Registering for the exam requires payment of the registration fee.
And the registration in the corresponding call within the period indicated.

To process the title you must pay the issuing fee.
When you have passed the exam and the practicals.

Nautical medical certificate

When you go to process the issuance of the title you must pass a psychophysical examination and attach it to the application.
You can reuse it within a period of 24 months, that is, once a title has been issued, within a period of 24 months you can use the same CM to issue the next title.

Deadlines

To sign up for an exam there are specific deadlines, which you can consult at Port School, on the website of the Generalitat de Catalunya or in your CCAA.
To request the issuance of your degree, the maximum period will be 24 months from the date on which the exam notes are published.

In the same way, the period of 24 months counts from the date on which the internships have been passed. If you have not passed the exam, you have 23 months to do so and issue the degree.

Validity period

Nautical licenses are valid for 10 years.
To renew it you must pay the corresponding fee and provide a medical certificate.

PER

With the Recreational Boat Skipper/Wave – PER, you will be able to:
– Sailing with motorboats up to 15 meters in length.
– Move away from the coast up to 12 nautical miles (± 22 km).
– Drive all kinds of jet skis.

In addition to passing the exam, you must complete two mandatory internships:
– Navigation | Safety and navigation (16 hours).
– Radio operator | Short-range operator radio (12 hours).

Yacht Skipper

Once you have overcome the PER Your next title will be Yacht Skipper and you will be able to:
– Sail on motorboats up to 24 meters long.
– Move away from the coast up to 150 nautical miles.

In addition to passing the exam, you must complete two mandatory internships:
– Navigation | Safety and navigation (48 hours).

Sailing qualification

For the PER, Yacht Skipper and Yacht Captain, the sailing practices are the same and you will only do them once, that is, if they are done with the PER for example, they do not have to be done again for the higher qualifications, in this way, when obtaining a new qualification, this will already be qualified for sailing.
