Basic Safety Training

Prepare yourself to safely face emergency situations on board.

Once you have completed the course, you will know how to act by applying procedures that minimize possible dangers in terms of firefighting, first aid, survival and accident prevention.

Basic Safety Training maritime

 Mandatory certificate to work in the nautical/maritime sector.

To obtain the certificate, you must complete a face-to-face course, with mandatory attendance, consisting of four modules that establish the minimum standards of competence in: Personal survival techniques, First-level fire prevention and fighting, First aid and Personal safety and social responsibilities.

Theory: 45 hours

In air-conditioned classrooms a few minutes from the center of Barcelona.
On certain dates the course is also taught in Girona.

Internships: 25 hours

On the open sea, on board, in the field of fire and in the classroom.

Validity: 5 years

The certificate must be revalidated by completing a refresher course.

The Basic Safety Training course is approved in Spain by the General Directorate of the Merchant Marine.

The objective of the module is to obtain the necessary skills to comply with emergency procedures, take precautions to prevent pollution of the marine environment, observe safety practices at work and contribute to effective communications on board the ship.

Personal survival techniques. A-VI/1-1
Theory in the classroom. Practices in abandonment, survival, lifeboat in a special area set up for EscolaPort in the Parc del Fòrum.

The objective of the module is to obtain the necessary skills for survival at sea in the event of ship abandonment.

Firefighting practices in a fire camp

First level fire prevention and fighting. A-VI/1-2
Theory in the classroom. At the fire camp, just a few minutes from the school, you will learn how to fight fires and extinguish them.

The objective of the module is to obtain the necessary skills to minimize fire risks and maintain a state of preparedness that allows responding at all times to emergency situations in which fires occur.

To request the issuance of the certificate of Basic Safety Training you will have to submit the following documentation to the Maritime Administration of your autonomous community:

Maritime booklet

LA Maritime Booklet is the official identity document of the sailor., internationally accepted, in which the embarkations and disembarkations of the holder are recorded.

It is issued by the DGMM and must be requested at the Maritime Captaincy.

To obtain it, the interested party must have a professional nautical title or a maritime specialty certificate, such as the Basic Safety Training Certificate.

To be able to embark, you must pass a medical examination for maritime embarkation (free) which is carried out at the ISM Maritime Health Centers, belonging to Social Security.

Why do I need the Maritime Booklet?

  • Request medical assistance in any port city, Spanish or foreign.
  • Benefit from medical check-ups at the Social Institute of the Navy.
  • Spend the night in the numerous Casas de la Mar located in most port cities in Spain, paying a symbolic amount for their services.
  • Request repatriation in cases of urgency or necessity.
  • Insert or request job offers through the different means available to the ISM.

"The possession of the Basic Training Certificate will be required of all personnel who perform professional maritime functions on civilian ships, as well as those who are entrusted with safety or pollution prevention tasks related to the ship's operations, by virtue of the Ship's Schedule of Obligations and Instructions, the Onboard Emergency Plan in the event of Oil Pollution or the Safety Management Manual."
