What is PER?

The PER (Pleasure Craft Skipper) is the most sought-after nautical title for recreational navigation. It allows you to navigate with boats up to 15 meters long and navigate to 12 nautical miles from the coast.

The PER title is ideal for those who want enjoy the sea with total freedom, and can be expanded with additional practices to sailing on sailboats or perform the crossing between the peninsula and the Balearic Islands with ships of up to 24 meters long.

Requirements to obtain the title PER – Pleasure Craft Skipper

Minimum age: 18 years

To register for the exam or do the practices you must be of legal age.

The practices of security and navigation, and the formation of radio operator, you must complete them to obtain the PER with basic attributes.

You can complete the internship before or after the exam.

Steps to obtain the title of Recreational Boat Skipper (PER)

Depending on the time you have and the type of course you choose, you can take the PER in less than 15 days... or do it more calmly in a couple or three months.

2 – Review and study from home

Dedicate half an hour a day to review the syllabus, take tests and test yourself with the exams available in the virtual classroom.

3 – Pass the exam

4 – Complete the mandatory internships

Short-range radio operator training (12 hours) and safety and navigation practices (16 hours).

5 – Do complementary internships (optional)

If you want to sail with sailboats or make the crossing between the peninsula and the Balearic Islands with boats up to 24 meters long.

6 – Process the title

Once you have passed the theoretical exam and completed the practicals, request the issuance of the certificate from the competent authority, presenting the nautical medical certificate and paying the corresponding fee.

The exams for the PER title are called in Catalonia by the Generalitat and there are more than eight conocatories a year.

Theoretical content of the PER course

These are the 11 topics that you will be asked questions about in the exam.

All units are related, and understanding them as a whole is key to optimal training.

UT 1. Nautical nomenclature

Identify and name the different parts and elements of the ship. Know and name navigation concepts, notions and expressions.

UT 2. Mooring and anchoring elements

Identify and name the different parts and elements of mooring and anchoring. Know and name concepts, notions and expressions associated with the anchoring maneuver. Know the requirements, conditions and procedures to carry out an effective and safe mooring or anchoring maneuver.

UT 3. Safety at sea

Prepare your boat before each departure. Know what precautions you should take in bad weather. Keep the boat stable in the face of any weather changes. Know what safety elements are mandatory to carry on board in your navigation area. What to do in the event of: fire, person in the water (all maneuvers), treat an injured person on board, tow a boat, call Rescue and Radio-Medical Service.

UT 4. Legislation

Identify the different regulatory bodies. Know the basic regulations and rules in the maritime sector. Know the limitations on navigation near the coast. Know the basic aspects of permitted and prohibited discharges at sea. Know the protected areas of the Mediterranean. Navigation guidelines in case of encountering cetaceans.

UT 5. Accreditation

Identify the regulations applicable to maritime signaling. Identify the regions of the world that have the same beaconing system. Know all the marks in ports. Identify the different marks and what to do when sighted. Know the different rhythms and colors of the lights of the marks.

UT 6. RIPA (International Regulations for Preventing Collisions)

Know the traffic rules with normal and reduced visibility. Recognize when there is a risk of collision and what maneuvers to perform. Know how to approach a vessel. Know how to avoid collision in different situations. Passing preferences according to the type of vessel. Recognize a vessel by its lights and what situation it is in. Identify the acoustic signals that vessels emit during maneuvers.

UT 7. Maneuvering and navigation

Understand, theoretically, the factors to take into account when performing maneuvers with the boat. Develop a mental diagram of how each maneuver is carried out for different situations. Master the vocabulary related to the handling of heads and moorings.

UT 8. Emergencies at sea

Know the procedures for acting in cases of personal accidents. Know by heart the means of contact to request assistance. Know how to react and proceed in cases of grounding, breakdowns or collisions. Know the conditions in which a fire can occur, how to avoid them and how to extinguish it. Know what to do in case of having to abandon the boat.

UT 9. Meteorology

Know where to get a reliable weather report. Know how to interpret the information in weather reports according to the Douglas and Beaufort scales. Understand what storms and anticyclones are, how they are produced and how they move. Recognize coastal breezes. Understand how waves are generated. Know the scales and measuring instruments.

UT 10. Theory of navigation

Understand the terms and concepts that apply to coastal navigation charts. Read and interpret all the symbols on a navigation chart. Understand theoretically how to locate yourself at a specific point on a navigation chart.

UT 11. Navigation chart

Know how to locate yourself at sea using a map and reference points on land. Obtain coordinates on a map. Calculate distances, times and speeds. Plot courses on a map and make the necessary corrections to reach the desired point.

What is the title?

Your nautical certificate will be a PDF document.

You can download it, from your personal space, in the application of the nautical department of the Generalitat de Catalunya.

There are neither physical titles (carnet, folio, etc.) nor provisional ones, only the definitive title.

To process it, you will simply have to pay the corresponding fee and upload your medical certificate to the application.

You can do the expedition once you have completed the internship and passed the exam.

Both the exam pass and the practicals will be registered in the computer system, you will not need any document or proof.

The exam assesses the theoretical knowledge of the content of the 11 units of the syllabus.

The exams are called in Catalonia by the Generalitat and there are eight calls a year.

You can sign up for the exam you prefer voluntarily, the school will not register you for the exam without your formal authorization.

It is not mandatory to sign up for the one that coincides with the theoretical training.

Frequently asked questions about the PER title

What is the difference between PNB and PER?

It depends on your interests and the size of the boat you want to take.

If your plan is to go out on Sunday with family or friends to spend the day at the cove, go diving or maybe go fishing on boats 8 meters, the PNB it's your choice. You will have to study six topics and complete 12 hours of practice.

If you want to sail with more freedom, or more, separate yourself from the coast until you lose sight of it and make long-term crossings, the PER is the title you need. You will have to study eleven topics and complete 28 hours of internships.

PER course face-to-face or streaming?

It is a personal decision that depends on your preferences, conditions, time and possibilities.

In both modalities the success rate is equally high. More than 90% are suitable, in the examination, on the first, .

Our streaming courses allow you to follow the class as if you were in the classroom, since no matter where you are you can actively participate in the class.

The face-to-face option is good for you if you prefer to move around and share with colleagues in the classroom.

How much time do I have to spend to get the PER title?

Between 15 days and 3 months is a reasonable period, depending on the type of course you choose, how much time you spend studying at home and how you organize your internship.

Keep in mind that you have 24 months to issue the PER title once you have passed the exam or completed some practice.

The degree must be issued within this period, otherwise, either the exam or the practicals, they must be repeated.

Also, 24 months is the period of validity of the medical certificate you use to issue the qualification. If, within 24 months of issue, you expand your qualifications or obtain a higher qualification, you can reuse the medical certificate.
