Requirements

Be 16 years or older

To sign up for the PNB exam or do the internship you must be over 16 years old.
You will need a signed authorization from your parents or guardians.

Pass a theoretical exam

In Catalonia, official exams are held several times each year.
At EscolaPort we schedule theoretical courses on dates close to each call.

Complete the practices

In addition to passing the exam, you must do 2 compulsory practices: Navigation 8 hours and Radio 4 hours.
You can do the practice before or after the exam.

Expand attributions?

If you want to steer sailboats, in addition to the mandatory ones, you must do complementary sailing practices at 4 p.m.
If you do the sailing practice after having issued the title, you must request a new issue to include the new attributions.

Pay fees

Examination
Registering for the exam requires payment of the registration fee.
And the registration in the corresponding call within the period indicated.

To process the title you must pay the issuing fee.
When you have passed the exam and the practicals.

Nautical medical certificate

When you go to process the issuance of the title you must pass a psychophysical examination and attach it to the application.
Only what is done in centers authorized by the DGT is valid. Once completed it expires after 90 days, it is important that you get it after passing the exam and the internship.

Deadlines

To sign up for an exam there are specific deadlines, which you can consult at Port School, on the website of the Generalitat de Catalunya or in your CCAA.
To request the issuance of your degree, the maximum period will be 24 months from the date on which the exam notes are published.

In the same way, the period of 24 months counts from the date on which the internships have been passed. If you have not passed the exam, you have 23 months to do so and issue the degree.

Validity period

The PNB title is valid for 10 years.
To renew it you must pay the corresponding fee and provide a medical certificate.

PNB courses during the week

Three theoretical classes, three hours each, on Tuesdays and Thursdays, plus a review class before the exam.

By enrolling in the course you will have immediate access to the online course platform with: random online quizzes, exam history, video classes and unlimited streaming tutorials.

You can choose between taking your PNB course during the week between these two options: Online or in person.

In-person theoretical course to prepare for the PNB exam with four three-hour theoretical classes on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

You can take the course at 10:00 or 19:00, in addition, streaming tutorials to resolve doubts.

You can do all the practices before, during or after.

With the PNB title you will be able to sail in motorboats up to 8 meters in length and move away from a port or shelter within a radius of 5 miles (± 9 Km).

To obtain these attributions, in addition to passing the exam, you must complete two mandatory internships:

Radio | Radio communications 4 h.

PNB – Face-to-face during the week | You can do theory and practice in fifteen days.

Four 3-hour face-to-face classes, Tuesday and Thursday. Choose between 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. or 7:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m.

If you can't attend class one day, you can stream the class from a computer or watch the recording the next day.

All classes and tutorials are recorded, so you can watch them again as many times as you want at aula.escolaport.com.

If while preparing the theory you do the practicals, your training will be much better.

PNB Practices at the Port Olímpic of Barcelona

You must complete the safety and navigation practices, and the training in radio communications to obtain the PNB with basic attributions.

You can complete the practices before or after the exam.

Through various exercises in port and open sea you will learn how to navigate safely, how to maneuver, anchor and the use of basic ropes and knots.

Duration: 8 hours
Two consecutive 4-hour sessions.
You can do them in one or two days, during the week or at the weekend.
Enablement: 8 m motor boats.
To carry sailboats you have to do complementary practices.

You will learn how to operate the on-board radio, how to make distress, emergency and safety communications, and much more.

Duration: 4 hours
Two hours of theoretical class and two hours of practice with simulators.

PNB – Sailing practices

Carrying out various exercises in port and open sea you will learn how to sail safely, how to maneuver, anchor and the use of basic ropes and knots.

Duration: 16 hours
During the week in four sessions or at the weekend in two sessions.
Enablement: Steering of sailing vessels, within the limits of the title.
On which ships: They are carried out on J/80 sailboats of 8 m and Cruise of more than 12 m.

What is the title?

Your nautical certificate will be a PDF document.

You can download it, from your personal space, in the application of the nautical department of the Generalitat de Catalunya.

There are neither physical titles (carnet, folio, etc.) nor provisional ones, only the definitive title.

To process it, you will simply have to pay the corresponding fee and upload your medical certificate to the application.

You can do the expedition once you have completed the internship and passed the exam.

Both the exam pass and the practicals will be registered in the computer system, you will not need any document or proof.
