Yacht Skipper – Navigation Practices

Yacht Skipper Internships in Barcelona.

On board one of our sailboats of over 15 m, we set sail on a Friday afternoon from Port Olímpic bound for the Balearic Islands and return to Barcelona on Sunday.

The mandatory safety and navigation practices to obtain the EscolaPort Yacht Skipper title are held every month.

Requirements

Requirements to obtain the title of Yacht Skipper

Have a PER degree


To sign up for the PI exam you must have issued the PER title
If you don't have the PER yet, you can hire one pack with both courses.

Pass a theoretical exam

In Catalonia, 3 PI exams are held a year.
At EscolaPort we schedule theoretical courses on dates close to each call.

Complete the practices

In addition to passing the exam, you must do a mandatory practice: Navigation 48 hours.
You can do the practice before or after the exam.

Expand attributions?

If you want to steer sailboats, in addition to the mandatory ones, you have to do complementary practices.
If you do the complementary practices after having issued the degree, you must request a new issue to include the new attributions.

Pay fees

Examination
Registering for the exam requires payment of the registration fee.
And the registration in the corresponding call within the period indicated.

expedition
To process the title you must pay the issuing fee.
When you have passed the exam and the practicals.

Nautical medical certificate

When you go to process the issuance of the title you must pass a psychophysical examination and attach it to the application.
Only what is done in centers authorized by the DGT is valid. Once completed it expires after 90 days, it is important that you get it after passing the exam and the internship.

Deadlines

To sign up for an exam there are specific deadlines, which you can consult at Port School, on the website of the Generalitat de Catalunya or in your CCAA.
To request the issuance of your degree, the maximum period will be 24 months from the date on which the exam notes are published.

In the same way, the period of 24 months counts from the date on which the internships have been passed. If you have not passed the exam, you have 23 months to do so and issue the degree.

Validity period

The YS title is valid for 10 years.
To renew it you must pay the corresponding fee and provide a medical certificate.

Yacht Skipper – Navigation Practices – complementary practices

Yacht Skipper sailing practices

Complementary practices are voluntary and valid to expand the basic attributions you obtain with the mandatory practices.

You have to complete the sailing practices if you are interested in sailing sailboats, they last 16 hours and you can complete them in 4-hour daily sessions during the week or in two 8-hour sessions on a weekend.

The groups have a maximum of 11 participants in the navigation practices.

On board the practice boat, your instructor will evaluate your performance and active participation in the EscolaPort sailing practices.
Yacht Skipper – Navigation Practices

Evaluation of practices

Unlike the exam, the internships are evaluated by the nautical school, with the internship instructor awarding Pass or Fail.

The instructor must assess the student's ability, in accordance with the following points, and may not sign the corresponding practice certificate if any of them are not met: 

  1. Punctuality and attendance at practices.
  2. Acceptance of the rules of the recreational nautical school. The student will have to accept the school's rules for teaching the practices.
  3. Active participation. The student must participate actively during the entire internship, being receptive to the training.
Cancellation/Change of practices

You can modify the date of your reservation or temporarily cancel your reservation by notifying the school with:
– 48 hours in advance for navigation and radio practices.
– Five days for the crossing practices.

The nautical school is forced to financially penalize non-attendance at practices.

The amount of this penalty is:
– €45 for navigation and radio practices.
– €95 for crossing practices.

To avoid penalties, any change in date or cancellation of internships must be notified, in writing, to the school with:
– 48 hours in advance for navigation and radio practices.
– Five days for the crossing practices.

Nautical schools are obliged to notify the number of participants in the practices to the Generalitat de Catalunya, days before they take place.

Once the school has notified the Generalitat of the list of participants, it cannot be changed except in the event of demonstrable force majeure*.

If a participant does not show up for the internship, they will not be able to be evaluated and their APTE will not be recognized, but they will also cause harm to another person who has not been able to fill their place and to the school, which will not be able to sell that place.

*Causes of force majeure: illness, accident, etc.

Statement of practices

At EscolaPort, we register all your internships (compulsory and complementary) in the computer system of the Nautical Department of the Generalitat de Catalunya, before and after you complete them.

Official exam in Catalonia

The exam assesses the theoretical knowledge of the content of the 4 units of the syllabus.

Questions related to internships are not included. The practices will be evaluated by an EscolaPort instructor.

Procedures

The fees and administrative procedures to register for exam and issuing the PI title is around €250.

You can manage it directly with the Generalitat de Catalunya or delegate these processes to the school.

Yacht Skipper – Navigation Practices

What is the title?

Your nautical certificate will be a PDF document.

You can download it, from your personal space, in the application of the nautical department of the Generalitat de Catalunya.

There are neither physical titles (carnet, folio, etc.) nor provisional ones, only the definitive title.

To process it, you will simply have to pay the corresponding fee and upload your medical certificate to the application.

You can do the expedition once you have completed the internship and passed the exam.

Both the exam pass and the practicals will be registered in the computer system, you will not need any document or proof.

Pro yacht pattern

Your Yacht Skipper title may have additional qualifications to provide paid services and, for example, to be able to charter with tourists.

to be Pro yacht pattern you need the issued PI title with all attributions (Sailing) and the STCW certificate Basic Safety Training.

If you already have the PER, you can obtain the PY title within 2 to 6 months, depending on your dedication, and the Basic Training course in two weeks.
