PER Internships

PER internships at the Olympic Port of Barcelona.

Every week: Safety and navigation, sailing, navigation in the Balearic Islands and Radio operator.

To obtain the PER title you must complete an internship and Radio Operator training. You can do them before or after you approve the exam, you decide

If you want the basic qualification, you only have to do the mandatory ones, but if you want to take sailboats, sail to the Balearic Islands or take boats of up to 24 meters, you also have to do complementary practices.

Be 16 years or older

To sign up for the PNB exam or do the internship you must be over 16 years old.
You will need a signed authorization from your parents or guardians.

In Catalonia, official exams are held several times each year.
At EscolaPort we schedule theoretical courses on dates close to each call.

In addition to passing the exam, you must do 2 compulsory practices: Navigation 8 hours and Radio 4 hours.
You can do the practice before or after the exam.

If you want to steer sailboats, in addition to the mandatory ones, you must do complementary sailing practices at 4 p.m.
If you do the sailing practice after having issued the title, you must request a new issue to include the new attributions.

Pay fees

Examination
Registering for the exam requires payment of the registration fee.
And the registration in the corresponding call within the period indicated.

When you go to process the issuance of the title you must pass a psychophysical examination and attach it to the application.
Only what is done in centers authorized by the DGT is valid. Once completed it expires after 90 days, it is important that you get it after passing the exam and the internship.


Deadlines

To sign up for an exam there are specific deadlines, which you can consult at Port School, on the website of the Generalitat de Catalunya or in your CCAA.
To request the issuance of your degree, the maximum period will be 24 months from the date on which the exam notes are published.

In the same way, the period of 24 months counts from the date on which the internships have been passed. If you have not passed the exam, you have 23 months to do so and issue the degree.

Validity period

The PNB title is valid for 10 years.
To renew it you must pay the corresponding fee and provide a medical certificate.

12 hours of PER radio operator training

Short-Range Radio Operator training, Radiooperador, is mandatory for obtaining the PER title. This certificate qualifies the student to operate the on-board radio station and to use the communication and location devices of a boat correctly.

During the training, four hours will be of theoretical preparation and eight hours of practice with simulators.

Practices are carried out in comfortable air-conditioned classrooms, with state-of-the-art simulators, at the Port Olímpic in Barcelona.

  3. SMSSM operating procedures and detailed practical use of SMSSM subsystems and equipment.
  4. Operating procedures and regulation of radiotelephonic communications.

Your Short Range Radio-Operator Certificate will be included in your PER title.

It is a certificate endorsed by the International Telecommunications Union (ITU), the UN's specialized telecommunications body, in charge of regulating telecommunications at the international level between the different administrations and operating companies.

Before doing the internship (8 hours) you must complete a theoretical module (4 hours) which consists of two parts.
1 – On your own:
– Read the presentations and watch the videos of the 16 units of the theoretical content.

PER – 16 hours of sailing practice

The working method is rotational participation, you and other crew members will alternate at the controls of the ship and work as a team to develop different maneuvers in 4-hour sessions.

In addition to your instructor's instructions, your learning will depend as much on what you do as on careful observation, and understanding, of the successes and failures of the other participants. Sailing is a team effort.

Remember that sailing is learned by sailing. In the 16 hours of practice we will give you the basics to sail safely, but only as you accumulate hours and miles in different situations, sea conditions and types of boat, you will come to have the confidence and security necessary to to steer a boat with guarantees.

Joint practices of Navigation in the Balearic Islands and sailing in a single crossing.

On a crossing to the Balearic Islands, departing from the Olympic Port of Barcelona, you will do two practices at the same time. We will leave on a Friday evening and return on Sunday.

They are carried out in a single session in a crossing regime. The duration will be 48 hours, with at least 8 hours of night navigation.

Evaluation of practices

Unlike the exam, the internships are evaluated by the nautical school, with the internship instructor awarding Pass or Fail.

The instructor must assess the student's ability, in accordance with the following points, and may not sign the corresponding practice certificate if any of them are not met: 

  1. Punctuality and attendance at practices.
  2. Acceptance of the rules of the recreational nautical school. The student will have to accept the school's rules for teaching the practices.
  3. Active participation. The student must participate actively during the entire internship, being receptive to the training.

You can modify the date of your reservation or temporarily cancel your reservation by notifying the school with:
– 48 hours in advance for navigation and radio practices.
– Five days for the crossing practices.


The nautical school is forced to financially penalize non-attendance at practices.

The amount of this penalty is:
– €45 for navigation and radio practices.
– €95 for crossing practices.

To avoid penalties, any change in date or cancellation of internships must be notified, in writing, to the school with:
– 48 hours in advance for navigation and radio practices.
– Five days for the crossing practices.

Nautical schools are obliged to notify the number of participants in the practices to the Generalitat de Catalunya, days before they take place.

Once the school has notified the Generalitat of the list of participants, it cannot be changed except in the event of demonstrable force majeure*.

If a participant does not show up for the internship, they will not be able to be evaluated and their APTE will not be recognized, but they will also cause harm to another person who has not been able to fill their place and to the school, which will not be able to sell that place.

*Causes of force majeure: illness, accident, etc.

The PER exam lasts an hour and a half. 45 questions of which you must answer at least 32 correctly.
