How to obtain the PER title: requirements and steps

To obtain the title of Boat Skipper‘recreation (PER) you don't need any previous qualifications. You just need to pass the theoretical exam and do the mandatory practices.

Requirements to obtain the title PER – Pleasure Craft Skipper

Minimum age: 18 years

To register for the exam or do the practices you must be of legal age.
If you are 16 years old you can take it off PNB.

Pass a theoretical exam

In Catalonia, more than eight official PER exams are held each year.

Expand the powers of the PER?

With the PER title you can expand your powers by doing complementary practices:
Sailing: steering sailing boats.
Balearic: sail between the peninsula and the Balearic Islands and increase the maximum length to 24 meters.
If you do these prcatices after processing your title, you will have to request a new issue to include them.

Examination
Registration for the exam requires payment of a fee.
Consult the deadlines and notices a Escola Port or on the website of Generalitat de Catalunya.

Once the exam and practices have been passed, the issuing fee must be paid to obtain the degree.

Nautical medical certificate

When you go to process the degree, it is necessary to pass a psychophysical medical examination at a center authorized by the DGT.
The certificate is valid for 90 days, therefore, it is advisable to do it after passing the exam and the practices.

Deadlines

The APTE in the exam and practices are valid for 24 months.
During this period, you will have to process the issuance of the title. If you do not, you will have to repeat the exam or practice, as appropriate.

Validity of the PER title

The PER title is valid for 10 years.
To renew it, you just have to pay the corresponding fee and present an updated medical certificate.

The practices of security and navigation, and the formation of radio operator, you must complete them to obtain the PER with basic attributes.

With your practice group you will carry out several exercises in port and open sea. You will learn how to navigate safely, how to maneuver, anchor, the use of ropes and basic knots, and much more.

Duration: 16 hours
Four consecutive sessions of 4 hours. You can do them in four days, during the week or in two at the weekend.
Enablement: Motor boats of 15 m.
To steer sailboats, or boats of up to 24 m, you must do complementary practices.

You will learn to operate the on-board radio, VHF equipment, radio beacons and other radio communication and navigation aid equipment. How to make distress, emergency and safety communications, and more.

In the 48 hours of sailing on a crossing, from Barcelona to the Balearic Islands, you will learn how to navigate safely on long crossings that include night navigation in addition to learning how to navigate safely on sailing boats.

Steps to obtain the title of Recreational Boat Skipper (PER)

Depending on the time you have and the type of course you choose, you can take the PER in less than 15 days... or do it more calmly in a couple or three months.

Materials needed at home:

– A work table, desk type, to do the navigation chart exercises.
– A computer or mobile phone to access the virtual classroom.

Teaching material:

– Nautical charts
– Protractor nautical angles
– Compass of points
– Cartabó
– Pencil
– Printed study guide (optional)

1 – Choose the theoretical course modality

To prepare you to pass the exam, we offer many options tailored to you:
– Online or in-person course
– With guided classes or at your own pace
– During the week or on weekends
– Intensive or onboard courses

2 – Review and study from home

Dedicate half an hour a day to review the syllabus, take tests and test yourself with the exams available in the virtual classroom.

The PER exam lasts an hour and a half. 45 questions of which you must answer at least 32 correctly.

3 – Pass the exam

There are official exam calls throughout the year.

4 – Complete the mandatory internships

Short-range radio operator training (12 hours) and safety and navigation practices (16 hours).
You can do the practicals before or after the exam. We recommend doing them at the same time as the theoretical course: this way you will better assimilate many concepts.

Extension FOR. Joint practices of Navigation in the Balearic Islands and sailing in a single crossing of 48 hours.

5 – Do complementary internships (optional)

If you want to sail with sailboats or make the crossing between the peninsula and the Balearic Islands with boats up to 24 meters long.

6 – Process the title

Once you have passed the theoretical exam and completed the practicals, request the issuance of the certificate from the competent authority, presenting the nautical medical certificate and paying the corresponding fee.

The exams for the PER title are called in Catalonia by the Generalitat and there are more than eight conocatories a year.

  • duration: 1 hour and 30 minutes.
  • questions: 45 in total, with a minimum of 32 correct answers.
  • Syllabus: 11 units.
  • Whether for the basic PER, sailing or Balearic Islands, the exam is the same.
  • You must bring the instruments to do the navigation chart exercises.
  • It does not include questions about internships.
  • The exam is bilingual, Spanish/Catalan.
    If you have difficulties with the language, you can bring a printed term translator on the day of the exam.

What is the title?

Your nautical certificate will be a PDF document.

You can download it, from your personal space, in the application of the nautical department of the Generalitat de Catalunya.

There are neither physical titles (carnet, folio, etc.) nor provisional ones, only the definitive title.

To process it, you will simply have to pay the corresponding fee and upload your medical certificate to the application.

You can do the expedition once you have completed the internship and passed the exam.

Both the exam pass and the practicals will be registered in the computer system, you will not need any document or proof.

The fees and administrative procedures to register for the exam and issue the PER degree are around €150.

With the basic PER you can:
– Sail in motorboats up to 15 meters in length.
– Move away from the coast up to 12 nautical miles (± 22 Km).
- Handle all types of jet skis.

In addition to passing the exam, you must complete two mandatory internships:
– Navigation | Safety and navigation (16 hours).
– Radio operator | Short Range Radio Operator (12 hours).

Remember:

The theory exam is always the same, both for the Basic PER or PER with Balearic i candle, for example.

You can take the basic PER now and later complete the complementary practices and extend the attributions.
